Thomas L. “Tom” Harned, CEcD FM

Tom is a native Kentuckian coming to Logan County after being in Virginia for forty years.  He has served as the Director of the Virginia Institute for Economic Development and Industrial Developments Authorities at Virginia Tech.  He recently retired as Vice President of the Martinsville-Henry County Economic Development Corporation, and previously served as the Director of Economic Development for the City of Martinsville, Virginia.  He has extensive private sector experience in the lumber and construction industry in various executive positions.

 

His education and professional accomplishments include International Economic Development Council, Certified Economic Developer; graduate of the Virginia Institute for Economic Development at Virginia Tech; the University of Oklahoma, Economic Development Institute; graduate of the University of North Carolina, Economic Development Course; Duke University, MBA; and Western Kentucky University, Bachelor of Science.

 

Tom has been active in economic development activities with the City of Martinsville, the Commonwealth of Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, the Martinsville Uptown Revitalization Association and the Patrick Henry Development Council.  He recently served on the IEDC Board of Directors Executive Committee. 

He recently served as President of the Virginia Economic Developers Association.

 

His successful projects include the establishment of a new business park with a shell building, a new industrial park, recruiting several new employers representing over two thousand new employees, the Small Business Development Center in Martinsville, a small business incubator, a new Department of Motor Vehicles Customer Service Center, several expansions in Martinsville Industrial Park, a new Farmers’ Market, a residential subdivision development, a shopping center development and several adaptive reuse redevelopment projects.

 

He and his wife Judy will be relocating to Logan County.  They have two grown children and one grandson.
